I haven't tried those Gaiam ones - but it should mean it's grippy because of the foam. If you wanted you could come to my taster class on 1st June (7pm) to try it out with other newbies! Then you can try different sizes and see how you get on. Everyone will be in the same boat as you. Do you mind if I ask what clothes size you are? You can send me a message direct if you don't want to post it for all to see! It might be you need something bigger or even smaller for success.

Send me an email to salsa@happyhulamonkeys.com and by then I should ahve the Romsey details for you!

Hi Sal....Thanks so much for the reply, it's very encouraging :D The bad news is that my hoop is an adult one and I still can't do it! It's a Gaiam dance hoop, weighs about 1kg, 42" in diameter and about 1" thick, but it's all foamy and I'm wondering if that's best - gonna go out and buy some tubing to try and make my own - maybe make it even bigger. And I'm wondering if the foam's making it slippy but I've tried it on bare skin and cotton clothes and it made no difference.

And about the classes - this is what I'm worried about, because you say everyone can do it by the end, but I had my friend down and we spent all evening in front of the hulaerobics DVD and practicing and I still didn't get it! And I really don't wanna be the only one hiding at the back who can't keep it up!!!

Hi Sarah,

Thanks for your post - you can ask anything hoopy here so no worries!

First of all I believe there are some classes in Romsey which you could go to - I have the details somewhere of the lady who takes the classes but I can't see them at the mo. I'll hunt them out and send them on to you.

Secondly - what sort of hoop are you using? If it's a kids hoop then you will be struggling. The hoops we use are bigger and heavier which make them easier to keep going. Also it is all about practice, motivation and keeping a positive attitude - read my piece about the first hoop taster class I held ('You're Hooped') on the homepage and scroll down. You should expect to drop the hoop a lot at first but this makes it all the more pleasing when you see how much you progress with practice.

ALL of us dropped the hoop to begin with - no matter what you see on the videos. New classes always start with a bang as hoops fall to the fall but by the end of it everyone can keep it going! Don't feel you have to go to a class already being able to keep the hoop going for any length of time.

Trust me - hooping is so good for you that it is worth pursuing. I believe that everyone can hoop given the right equipment, space, time and encouragement. My class is very diverse - young, old, male, female, big, little and we all enjoy the class - there is something for everyone. People will always go away having learned at least one move that they're good at.

I'll try to find those details and send them on but let me know about your hoop and I'll see if I can recommend anything which you might find easier to get you going. Maybe even come to our Hoop Disco on 13th June and try out some different hoops there and just have some fun! I'm happy to help get you started.

Keep hooping!!!  ;D

Hey, this is totally random, sorry! I've just joined this forum as I'm VERY new to hooping (started this weekend!) and live in Southampton so was looking for local classes when I stumbled on this site. Just wondered if anyone knows any local classes as I'm debating travelling to Portsmouth for it if necessary so may have to get on the waiting list!

The other issue is I just can't keep the hoop up yet at all, and I've never been to a class before, so I feel stuck that I want help from someone who can do it, but I kind of feel I don't wanna join a class until I can at least keep it up at the waist or it'll just be embarrassing and very disheartening if everyone else can do it...I've been trying all weekend, and could never do it as a kid either! Is it worth pursuing? All the videos on youtube etc give such basic advice as if getting it going is child's play - I really want to learn and just can't seem to get it!! Lol not sure what I was asking there but any responses will be gratefully received! :D

I've just regsitered some of our ladies for the Race for Life starting with a practice session tomorrow (Sunday 3rd May). Details below:
Happy Hula Monkey Race for Life Practice and sunshine hoop-athon!
When: Tomorrow (Sunday 3rd May) between 10:30am and 12:30.
Where: Milton Park -Southsea (near the White House pub, parking on Goldsmith Avenue and Milton Road)
Don't forget your hoop, a bottle of water and wear comfy clothes.

This will of course be weather permitting - I'm hoping for glorious sunshine! I will have a few spare hoops with me if you have to drag along any family/friends!!!! If you're worried about your shiny hoop getting muddy then cut the end off of a roll of cling film (about 2inches wide) and wrap around your hoop for protection!

Big up the hoop! ;D
